1 Caelum Research Corporation at NASA Ames Research Center 2 University of Washington 3 Carnegie Mellon University ABSTRACT—The Pathfinder mission demonstrated the potential for robotic Mars exploration but at the same time indicated the need for more robust rover autonomy. Future planned missions call for long traverses over unknown terrain, robust navigation and instrument placement, and reliable operations for extended periods of time. Ultimately, missions may visit multiple science sites in a single day and perform opportunistic science data collection, as well as complex scouting, construction, and maintenance tasks in preparation for an eventual human presence. Significant advances in robust autonomous operations are needed to enable these types of missions.

Overview of the Mars Exploration Rovers’ Autonomous Mobility and Vision Capabilities
NASA’s Mars Exploration Rovers have set the standard for autonomous robotic exploration of planetary surfaces. Their abilities to detect and avoid geometric hazards, and measure and compensate for slip or heading changes, have made it possible to drive farther and in highly sloped areas, increasing the science return of the mission. Software updates that took place during the more than three ye...
متن کاملGlobal planning on the Mars Exploration Rovers: Software integration and surface testing
In January 2004, NASA’s twin Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs), Spirit and Opportunity, began searching the surface of Mars for evidence of past water activity. In order to localize and approach scientifically interesting targets, the rovers employ an on-board navigation system. Given the latency in sending commands from Earth to the Martian rovers (and in receiving return data), a high level of n...
متن کاملA Swarm of Mars “Tumbleweed” Rovers: Collective Exploration of Rugged Landscapes Leveraging Environmental Gradients
In this paper we investigate the potential for a swarm of winddriven Mars rovers (“Tumbleweeds”) to provide robust, autonomous exploration of rugged terrain. We propose new algorithms for collective intelligence, implemented via agent movement rules and mobile ad hoc network communication. We discuss the new algorithms and how they address the limitations of the current research, then present i...
متن کاملAutonomous Rovers for Human Exploration of Mars
Autonomous rovers are a critical element for the success of human exploration of Mars. The robotic tasks required for human presence on Mars are beyond the ability of current rovers; these tasks include landing-site scouting and mining, as well as emplacement and maintenance of a habitat, fuel production facility, and power generator. These tasks are required before and also during human presen...
متن کاملVision-based Terrain Classification and Classifier Fusion for Planetary Exploration Rovers
Autonomous rover operation plays a key role in planetary exploration missions. Rover systems require more and more autonomous capabilities to improve efficiency and robustness. Rover mobility is one of the critical components that can directly affect mission success. Knowledge of the physical properties of the terrain surrounding a planetary exploration rover can be used to allow a rover system...
متن کاملReal - time 3 - D Perception for Mars Rovers
The U.S. has been working on autonomous navigation of robotic vehicles since the 19603, when the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) developed a prototype lunar rover for the Surveyor program. The earliest U.S. and Russian rovers were essentially teleoperated, which was acceptable for the few seconds of communication delay between Earth and the moon. In the 1970’s, JPL began working on rovers for M...
